Song Structure

The popular song structure that is used in most pop songs goes along the lines of A – B – A – B – C – B. In other words, verse – chorus – verse – chorus – bridge – chorus. When writing your song, you can start off with this structure and stem from there. You can add another verse or chorus. You can start the song with the chorus. You can end the song with another section that is different from the verse, chorus, and bridge.

The main thing to keep in mind when writing your pop song is that you want to keep a sense of familiarity and a sense of freshness at the same time. This means that you want to repeat sections without over repeating them. This also means that you want to introduce new sections for variety and reintroduce sections for familiarity.

Melody

The pop song is effective because of its hook. A hook is the section of the song that gets itself hooked into the minds of listeners. It’s the part that sticks out, the part that makes an impression. When people find themselves singing a certain song out of the blue, it is thanks to the hook.

For pop songs, the hook is effective when placed in the chorus since the chorus usually contains lyrics that do not change through out the song. Because of the repetition and the catchiness of the section, it makes a bigger imprint on the mind.

How do you know if it’s a hook? You know when it’s a hook when you’re coming up with a melody and you can’t get it out of your head.

Lyrics

The content of your lyrics should be on a topic that is relevant. It could be about relationships, break ups, or about how angry you are about another person. It’s very effective when you draw out of your personal experiences since people share many experiences in common.

Writing a song when you’re in the emotional zone of whatever your song is about makes a deep effect on your songwriting. It’ll cause your lyrics to be more within the spirit of that emotion since you are feeling those feelings in that moment. So when you’re writing your song, feel the feelings you would feel if you were going through the story of your song. Imagine you are that person who is at the party, the guy who broke up with his girlfriend, the man who is facing one of the biggest challenges in his life, the girl who is looking for prince charming. This can help bring your song to life.

Write a pop song this week. If you’ve been having the time of your life, write about it. If you are going through heartache, write about it. Have fun writing your song structure and melody and share it with the people who are experiencing these emotions with you.
